Nelson Mandela

In most generations we do not see too many real heroes. In this generation we have been blessed with a real hero - Nelson Mandela.

Much has been said about him and his life and truthfully there is little I can add. He was inspirational, humble and charismatic. While these are not the three qualities we see in most modern leaders today these are not what made Mandela so impressive. What made him impressive was his self sacrifice and his ability to reason above his emotions.

27 years in prison on Roben Island. In the US 27 years served is considered life in prison. Actually, at the rate we are releasing prisoners today that maybe more than a life sentence. In that time any normal man would change and most for the worst. Somehow Mandela changed but for the better. He managed to see past his anger, sorrow and regret. He rose above his emotions for the good of his country. He defeated his own ego and defied his instincts for the greater good.

He came out stronger, compassionate with a vision for his country. He rose above decades of prejudice and hatred. He embraced his enemies thus disarming them completely. He proved what a true leader can accomplish. His spirit was infectious so the world flocked to his door. Sadly many went just so they could say they were "friends" of Mandela but even these self centered hypocrites were affected by his energy and vision.

Imagine if our modern leaders could ever do this. The world would be a much better place. I pray that perhaps his legacy will be to inspire a few of our world leaders to be a bit less self centered and politically motivated, and do more for the common good.

So today we say goodbye to a true hero and live with the hope we will see another rise to take his place in the next generation. RIP Nelson Mandela.

America Politics Gone Mad

In car racing we have a time in each season affectionately called the "Silly Season". For it is a time when all the trading and movement for the following season takes place. Driver switch teams or get fired, teams change suppliers or engines, teams switch leaders or engineers and race schedules and venues get selected or dumped. For racers it is time we expect to see massive change and sometimes surprises. Well it appears we are in the Silly Season in American politics. Yes we expect every 4 years that we will elect a President and it gets even sillier when we have a lame duck in the White house. (sorry no disrespect the President Obama although the title seems to fit). This time around it is the worst Silly Season I have ever seen. Actually we might want to rename it the Ridiculous Stupid Season. Have you been paying attention to the political circus in since late last year? Of course you have you can't avoid it no matter what you do. That right there is part of the...

Porsche Perspective

Before I start I must declare that I am a Ferrari owner, racer and lover. As such Porsche is normally an arch enemy. Most of the faithful from each camp very rarely see eye to eye and often avoid each other like the plague. So for me to write this piece on Porsche is a stretch and proves once and for all, above all I am just a true lover of all cars! Porsche has to be respected for their longevity, their racing prowess and their myopic market focus. Porsche's have been racing and winning for as long as I can remember and while they are not a Ferrari their racing pedigree is remarkable. Initially their claim to fame was the basic 911. This is still their bread and butter car and over the decades has been improved markedly. But I am not going to focus on the 911, the Panamera or Cayenne. Today I want to discuss the smaller, younger cousins - the Cayman and the Boxster. These two "entry level" Porsches are worth writing about. Porsche first made the Boxster in 1997 in an...

American Hypocrits

I am confused and sad. All the polls for the last three years have shown the growing frustration and dislike the American people have for Congress. Actually, the approval rating for Congress is at 15% as of June. 9% was the lowest it has been in history and that happened late last year. Since 2012 we have averaged about 13% approval rating. I am one of those angry and frustrated Americans. The Congress has shown complete inability to conduct the business of the country and has bickered non stop since Obama took power. The have shown that their primary interest is their own political careers and not the will of the people. We are a laughing stock worldwide and this gridlock has affected our economy and foreign policy negatively. So here is the hypocrisy. If we hate the job the Congress is doing and we all agree that parties aside they are not performing to standards we the people have set, why don't we fire them? I just don't understand. We are a Democracy (really a republic...
